The mainstream type for civilian use is the carbon fiber‑reinforced silicon carbide ceramic brake disc.
Core Material & Manufacturing Process
Carbon ceramic discs use a carbon fiber preform as the structural skeleton, combined with a SiC ceramic matrix through processes such as CVI/PIP.
Carbon/carbon discs feature a pure carbon matrix, requiring extremely high-temperature sintering, with higher costs and stricter operating conditions.
Key Performance
Lightweight: Density is approximately 2.2 g/cm³, only one‑third that of cast iron, significantly reducing unsprung weight and improving handling and acceleration.
High temperature resistance & minimal fade: Carbon ceramics can withstand 1000–1400 °C with almost no thermal expansion, preventing brake fade. Carbon/carbon has an even higher instantaneous temperature limit but poor low‑temperature braking performance.
Extreme durability: Carbon ceramic discs can last 500,000 to 1,000,000 kilometers, far exceeding the 80,000–120,000 kilometer lifespan of cast iron discs.
Disadvantages
Very high initial cost; stiff pedal feel when cold; expensive maintenance and parts.
Carbon/carbon brakes are also vulnerable to rapid cooling in wet conditions.
Applications
Carbon/carbon: Formula 1, aircraft braking systems
Carbon ceramic: Supercars such as Porsche and Lamborghini, high‑performance electric vehicles (optional), heavy‑duty trucks for continuous downhill braking
Buying & Usage Tips
Not necessary for daily commuting with a limited budget; worthwhile only for frequent track days and repeated heavy braking on highways.
Must be used with dedicated carbon ceramic brake pads; do not mix with metallic pads.
Avoid heavy braking when cold to prevent abnormal disc wear.
